IC Insights: Intel will squeeze Samsung this year and return to the semiconductor throne

Memory semiconductors have been in a recession for a long time, and ICInsights, the market-adjusting company, predicts that Intel will surpass Samsung Electronics this year to reach the global semiconductor market.

According to the Korean media "Korean Daily" report, ICInsights data pointed out that the sales of the world's top 15 semiconductor companies in the first half of the year decreased by 18% compared with the same period of last year, if only the sales of the top three semiconductor semiconductors Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Micron sales The amount, which is more than 30% lower than the same period last year, is in stark contrast to the record of 36% growth in sales last year.

In the first half of the year, Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division sales were US$26,661 million (No. 2), a 33% decrease from the same period last year, SK Hynix ($11,558 million, 4th) and Micron (101.7 billion) Sales of 10,000 US dollars, 5th place were also reduced by 35% and 34% respectively.

On the other hand, Intel's sales in the first half of the year was 32.38 billion US dollars, only 2% lower than the previous year, winning the first place. Intel is dominated by non-storage semiconductors and is relatively less affected by the memory semiconductor industry.

ICInsights analyzed that from 2017 to 2018, Intel gave up the first place in the semiconductor market, Samsung Electronics became the new semiconductor market champion, but Samsung's main products DRAM, NAND flash memory market is in a downturn, this year Intel is expected to return easily throne.

It is worth noting that Sony has benefited from the image sensor business, with sales up 13% from the same period last year. It is also the only company among the top 15 with the largest sales growth.

In addition, HiSilicon will be promoted to the 15th place if it does not include the pure foundry TSMC. Hisilicon's sales in the first half of the year increased by 15% compared with the same period of last year, but ICInsights pointed out that most of Hisilicon's orders are from Huawei. If Sino-US trade disputes intensify, the growth trend of Hisilicon in the second half of the year may begin to slow down.
